Fall brings with it cooler temperatures and a change in the colors of the foliage. Reds, yellows, and oranges replace the vibrant greens of summer. Bare tree trunks and limbs stand in stark contrast to the bright colored leaves falling all around. When your thoughts turn to pumpkin spice and cozy sweaters, you might also think of fall’s most popular ornamental flower, the mum. These gorgeous blooms are the perfect addition to your porch or flower beds, but why?

What Makes Mums a Good Fall Plant?

The main reason that mums are so popular during autumn is the fact that they actually prefer cooler weather. In fact, some mum species can survive temperatures as low as 20 degrees below zero. As your summer blossoms fade away and the foliage dies back, mums get more vibrant as they start to bloom. Other reasons mums are great include:

  • Mums come in two varieties, garden and florist species. Garden variety mums are considered perennials, which means they grow and blossom year after year. Florist mums, on the other hand, are annuals that must be replanted each year.
  • One of the reasons mums are ideal fall decorative plants is they come in a wide range of colors. You can find mums in pink, orange, red, yellow, white, bronze, gold, purple, lavender, and there even multi color varieties.
  • The variety of shapes that mums come in might surprise you. There are literally dozens of species to choose from. There are some that resemble a daisy flower, others resemble fireworks in the sky, and still others look like a fluffy ball.
  • Mum plants generally grow to a height of one to three feet tall and as much as two feet wide. However, the flowers they produce can vary in size. The smallest mums are the size of a quarter while the largest blossoms can be as big as a serving dish.
  • You can successfully plant mums near trees and bushes directly into the ground, but be sure to plant perennials in spring or early fall for the best chance of success. Once established, you’ll be able to enjoy your mums year after year with little effort.
  • Mums are a popular decoration on porches during fall because they do well in pots. In fact, mums are so adaptable, they can be grown either outdoors or indoors all year long.
