That thoroughness comes with tradeoffs. It’s more labor-intensive, takes longer, and leaves a sizeable hole that needs to be filled and re-leveled once the work is done. It’s also the pricier of the two options, since there’s simply more involved.
The upside is a completely clean slate. If you want to plant a new tree in that exact spot, or you’re worried about roots interfering with a new structure, removal is the only method that actually clears the ground underneath.
Stump Grinding: The Faster, More Common Choice
Grinding is exactly what it sounds like. A stump grinder, a machine with a rotating cutting wheel on a long arm, is lowered onto the stump and worked back and forth until it’s ground down below the surface.
The process leaves the roots in the ground, just out of sight. The wood chips created along the way can be repurposed as mulch, and the ground surface is filled in over the remaining stump so the area blends back in with the rest of your yard.
Which should you choose?

- Is the stump near a structure, driveway, or septic line where roots could eventually cause problems?
